Tim Large of Ludington was fishing on Pere Marquette Lake Saturday morning when he caught this 18-pound, 40-inch northern pike. The fish had reeled off 30 yards of line when he set the hook and immediately realized he had a big one. The fish qualifies for Michigan DNR Master Angler status. Large said he was using a dead smelt for bait.

The U.S. Coast Guard is warning anglers and other recreational users to use extreme caution due to ice breaking operations. They will be making two trips and stopping at Ludington's Occidental Chemical Facility. Officials say ice fishermen should remove their ice shanties and equipment from these areas. Recreational users should plan their activities carefully and avoid the shipping channels.

Good morning from Hamlin Grocery!!!
It is a very cold, windy, single digit start to the day with blizzard conditions forecasted. I really don't have much to report.......
Waters are said to be somewhat cloudy , so very little spearing has been going on. A few panfish (perch & bluegill) being caught. It's been pretty slow. I had two brave souls in for bait this a.m. -- Sean McDonald, and Chris Quick. Both men love to fish and don't let Mother Nature slow them down.
I will post any reports that come in today, and over the weekend. If you should be out today, PLEASE dress for the conditions...... and drive safely. The roads are starting to drift. Have a great weekend!

Also some nice crappie being caught in the 12/14 inch range around dusk. The ice is about 10 inches thick and its a simple walk out.
Cold temps right now, remember to dress warm and be safe. Please stop in and show me your catch . Grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and tell me your fishing stories. Love to see your fish ! Happy New Year, 2014 is off to a great start.

Fishing was good again today. Fished in southern Ludington, Scottville area on St. Marys Lake. Plastics again out fished any and all other offerings. Blue glow head #5 size with a pink nuggy tail was very good, as was a chartreuse glow head with a red nuggy tail. Took a summer charter guest out on the ice, had a great time. Joe Yob made the trip up and enjoyed taking home the catch of 50 crappie. Booking a lot of charters lately for the up coming summer as well, so hope to here from you soon to reserve your date!!!!!!!!!

Fished this morning for a few hours. The fishing is definitely picking up! Fiskas chartreuse #4 jigs were the lure of choice tipped with a pink nuggy tail. The permanent shanties that gave the crappie grounds away and made it easy to go were you wanted to as a marker are off the lake. It didn’t hurt much though. The fish were suspended and following lures off bottom. Caught most of them 10 feet off bottom. Definitely helped with electronics ( Vexilar ) to be in front of the fish at all times. If you get a chance you definitely need to get out and enjoy this awesome last ice, Ice fishing. If not here in Ludington on Hamlin or another local lake, try your local ponds. Last Ice is Most times Best Ice.

As I predicted last ice is one of the best ice fishing times. Fished yesterday on Hamlin Lake, on Wilson Hill Park. The blue gill were suspended with a few crappie mixed in. Spikes were the bait of choice. Chartreuse color tungsten jigs tipped with spikes that is. Moving around and cutting a lot of holes was, and generally is your best bet to finding and keeping on the hungry fish. It seemed as I moved to different holes I would catch a few in those holes then move back to the most productive hole and catch 5 or 6 more until that hole dried up than move and come back to it after 15-20 minutes. Its back to wintery conditions for the next few days then warming up after a week or so. Once it gets warm again and more conducive to moving around I plan on fishing hard again.

Fishing has been spotty in the Mason County area. Many good catches of blue gill and crappie are getting more common with the last thaw and rain. Ice conditions are still good with a few treacherous spots but for the most part there is from 5 to 10 inches on Hamlin, Pere Marquette, Crystal and Silver Lakes. Two days ago I saw a beautiful catch of 25 blue gills come from Wilson Hill Park and a few good catches of Perch in the 7-10” range from the Pentwater sports shop have taken place recently. Look for fishing to get very good here this week and next with last Ice conditions always producing some of the best catches of the season.
